MSYP Motions - Scottish Youth Parliament November 24

Your Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament will be debating 5 Committee Motions and 10 Member mentions at their next sitting of the Scottish Parliament. 

If you live in Aberdeenshire and are aged 12-25. Please have a read of the motions and tell us if you agree or disagree to help your MSYPs represent your views.

To what extent do you agree with Members Motion 1? Introduce BSL into secondary education The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that British Sign Language should be  introduced into Secondary education as part of the core curriculum.

To what extent do you agree with members motion 2? Accessible period products in schools The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that all schools and education facilities  should be held responsible for providing clear and accessible period products and  young people should be given the opportunity to speak up when period products are  not accessible.

To what extent do you agree with Members Motion 3? Improve the accessibility of public transport The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that all public transport should be made  accessible and safe for people with physical and neurological disabilities, including  by improving support for physically boarding transport and pre booking services.

To what extent do you agree with Members Motion 4? Increase wellbeing support and improve funding for Scotland’s students and  apprentices The Scottish Youth Parliament believes Scotland’s students and apprentices are  being negatively impacted by inadequate support and calls upon the Scottish  Government, education institutions, employers, and other stakeholders to work  together to create a widespread and interlinked support system to improve student  and apprentice experience.

To what extent do you agree with members motion 5? Recognise and protect against femicide in Scots Law  The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that femicide should be recognised and  protect against in Scots Law.

To what extent do you agree with members motion 6? Incorporate mental health education into the school curriculum The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that mental health education should be more  thoroughly incorporated within the curriculum in schools and further education. This  education should focus on recognising the signs of mental health and where to seek  assistance.

To what extent do you agree with Members Motion 7? Access to Gaelic education and language The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that all children in Scotland should have  access to improved standards of Gaelic education in schools, and it is the duty of  local government to provide this education

To what extent do you agree with Members Motion 8? Ban all forms of vaping advertisement within sports  The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that all forms of vaping advertisements  should be banned from being associated with or featured in sports events, teams,  and venues across the United Kingdom.

To what extent do you agree with Members Motion 9? Mandatory training for all public transport workers on supporting wheelchair  users and those with other accessibility requirements The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that all members of staff working within the  public transportation sector must receive and complete comprehensive mandatory  training to ensure all wheelchair users, and those with accessibility needs, feel safe  and able to travel independently.

To what extent do you agree with members motion 10? Improve education on xenophobia and racism in schools The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that more should be done in schools in order  to educate young people on xenophobia and racism to reduce stereotyping and  increase understanding of immigrants and asylum seekers.

To what extent do you agree with Committee Motion 1? Protect funding and the quality of Scotland’s universities The Scottish Youth Parliament is deeply concerned with the continuing cuts to  higher education and universities and calls on the Scottish Government to do more  to protect funding and preserve the quality of Scotland’s world class institutions.

To what extent do you agree with Committee Motion 2? Improve education on food budgeting and cooking in a cost-of-living-crisis  The Scottish Youth Parliament calls on decision makers to improve food education in  schools, to equip students with the knowledge they need to navigate inflated pricing  and misleading promotions in order to cook tasty, nutritious and affordable meals.  This includes signposting resources to help young people access food as well as  teaching how to prepare tasty meals from simple ingredients to better equip  students with the skills necessary to cope with the cost-of-living crisis

To what extent do you agree with Committee Motion 3? Bolder action to improve Scotland’s global climate reputation The Scottish Youth Parliament is concerned about Scotland’s diminishing climate  reputation and calls for the Scottish Government to take bold action in order to  become a global leader on climate change.

To what extent do you agree with Committee Motion 4? Access to reliable and affordable broadband  The Scottish Youth Parliament urges the Scottish Government to ensure that all  young people have access to reliable and affordable broadband to address the  broadband inequality felt most by rural young people and ensure that all young  people in Scotland have the same opportunities to access essential skills and  information online.

To what extent do you agree with Committee Motion 5? Improve action to address root causes of anti-social behaviour by and towards  young people  The Scottish Youth Parliament acknowledges the recent rise in antisocial behaviour  by and towards young people and calls for further action by the Scottish Government  and Police Scotland to tackle the root causes of this issue.
