Will there still be free access to the new museum?

All of the permanent galleries will remain free to access. There will be an entry charge for the touring exhibitions, as these come with a hire charge and are more expensive to stage.

Will the new museum only show Peterhead material?

There will be a gallery dedicated to the Peterhead story, but the rest of the museum will showcase the wider story of Aberdeenshire.

Will collections only ever be displayed in Peterhead from now on?

No, while the Arbuthnot House Museum will showcase artefacts and stories from across Aberdeenshire, objects will still be displayed in other council museums in Banchory and Aberdeenshire Farming Museum. Artefacts will also continue to be loaned out to other museums for temporary exhibitions.

How are you deciding what goes into it?

Some decisions are being made based on conservation and security needs for the objects. But we will also be doing lots of outreach and engagement work over the next few years to ensure that Aberdeenshire residents’ views are taken into account and that we can work with communities to co-curate some of the displays.

Will you be borrowing back objects that have left Aberdeenshire?

Yes, the museums’ service plans to borrow material related to Aberdeenshire from other regional and national collections for short term display.

How accessible will the museum be?

The new building will include accessible lifts and toilets (including a Changing Places toilet) to make it welcoming to as many visitors as possible.

What will the Community Gallery/Space be used for?

We hope that community groups from across Aberdeenshire will co-curate exhibitions with us.

Will Mochie the polar bear be moving to the new museum?

Yes, and will be displayed in our new galleries with lots of friends.
