Litter campaign

Cllr Mair recently organised a Broch (Fraserburgh) Spring Clean and, in 3 weeks, collected over 350 bags and at least a ton of other peoples rubbish. Some of the schools in the area have shown an interest and one of the teachers in a local school, Dionne Whyte, is also a member of the community council and has offered to become a member of a ‘wombles’ type sub group.

The whole town has really got behind this anti litter drive and want to keep the momentum going. The best driver for this type of activity is often through the children. It has had a very positive effect on the morale of the whole area with the villages round about taking part, there were in the region of 100 volunteers of all ages from 5 to 85, local youth groups etc.

Last year Cllr Mair requested Waste Services modernise their messaging, which have been sent to all Aberdeenshire schools.

The goal is to make everyone understand that it isn’t just a wee problem of unsightliness – it is pollution, a danger to wildlife on land and at sea, a waste of valuable resources etc. It is also illegal with a fixed penalty notice of £80 to £2,500.
