Developing Aberdeenshire Equality Outcomes

There are laws in place to protect people from unfair discrimination due to their protected characteristics (e.g. age, sex, race).

To help with this, every four years Aberdeenshire Council needs to set equality outcomes, which state how the council aims to achieve improvements in people's life opportunities. The outcomes also apply to the Aberdeenshire Licensing Boards and to the Aberdeenshire Education Authority. The equality outcomes are used to measure the council's progress in making Aberdeenshire a fairer and more equitable place.

Many thanks for helping develop proposals for new Equality Outcomes for Aberdeenshire.

We have taken on board the feedback from the community survey, a Citizens’ Panel Survey, lived experience gathered from conversations that were held with a variety of community groups with protected characteristics, and representations made through formal consultation. This informed our proposed equality outcomes.

Information on proposed outcomes is available using the following link: Proposed Outcomes: Context

On 23rd September 2021, Aberdeenshire Council agreed the six equality outcomes for the next 4 years. All information relating to the outcomes can now be found on the Aberdeenshire Council Website: About equalities - Aberdeenshire Council.

Reporting equalities progress

In addition to our mainstreaming report, we set equalities outcomes every four years. These are developed with input from our local communities and staff and also help ensure that equalities are always an important consideration in everything we do.

In order to meet our legal obligations under the 2010 Equality Act, every two years we must report on progress in making equalities integral to our activities.

2023 report

Aberdeenshire Council, Aberdeenshire Education and Children’s Services Committee and the Aberdeenshire Licensing Board approved the Equality Mainstreaming and Outcomes 2021-2025 progress report (PDF 4.13MB).

Information on feedback received during the engagement is now available to view and representations received through the public consultation are available online.

We have taken on board the feedback from both a community survey and a Citizens’ Panel survey in February/March, and from conversations that were held with a variety of community groups with protected characteristics.  We have also taken account of recent research on the inequalities faced in Scotland and into the impact of Covid-19 on groups with protected characteristics.

We now have six proposed Aberdeenshire Equality Outcomes based on the evidence we have collected and would like to get your views on these. The survey takes a few minutes to complete and closes on 12th July 2021.  A brief summary of some of the evidence behind the outcomes is available to read.
