The aquarium will have an extension that will transform the building, incorporating a learning space and a second storey café/restaurant. Our architects have been inspired by maritime themes and Macduff’s shipbuilding heritage to create a striking design that engages with its coastal setting and sea views.

The visitor experience will feel fresh and innovative. The unique central display, native habitat themes and general internal layout of the aquarium that are so popular with customers will remain, but in addition we will have exciting new upgrades, experiential features and interpretation.

We are delighted to announce that we will be introducing a lobster hatchery at the aquarium for the first time. Growing on larval lobsters for release into the wild will boost the local lobster population, support the fishery in years to come and actively support local marine biodiversity.

The whole building will meet modern standards for energy efficiency and help reduce the aquarium’s carbon footprint. Other improvements will be made to meet operational standards for a modern zoo or aquarium.

The area surrounding the aquarium will be landscaped to improve biodiversity and encourage people to use the space with children’s activities and links to coastal paths, whilst the proposals will be mindful of nearby residential properties.

The extension has been planned around the collection of marine animals which will be kept on site throughout the project.
