Closure of Slains School Statutory Consultation

Aberdeenshire Council are consulting on the permanent closure of Slains School.  The consultation period will run from 18th May 2026 to 3rd July 2026.

Aberdeenshire Council proposes to discontinue education at Slains School which has now been demolished and re-assign its catchment area to either Hatton (Cruden) School, Newburgh Mathers School or Port Erroll School.

This consultation is being undertaken in accordance with the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010. The Act requires that changes to the school estate, including the proposed closure of a school is subject to rigorous statutory consultation.

Following the consultation period all comments received will be analysed, along with any written responses and emails received regarding the proposal.

A public meeting to discuss the proposal will be held at 6pm on the 10th June 2026 at Collieston and Slains Community Centre, Hightown, AB41 8RS.   

We want to get your views on the changes for Slains School and the options being proposed for the current catchment area of the school.

This survey will be open until 4pm on Friday the 3rd July 2026.

Options for Slains School Catchment Area 

The following options are being considered for the Slains School catchment area. 


Option 1 - Close Slains School and merge with Hatton (Cruden) School 

The Hatton (Cruden) School catchment in green would be extended to include the Slains School catchment area in blue and would become the new catchment area for Hatton (Cruden) School.


Option 2 - Close Slains School and merge with Newburgh Mathers School

The Newburgh Mathers School catchment in green would be extended to include the Slains School catchment area in blue and would become the new catchment area for Newburgh Mathers School.


Option 3 - Close Slains School and merge with Port Erroll School

The Port Erroll School catchment in green would be extended to include the Slains School catchment area in blue and would become the new catchment area for Port Erroll School.
