The purpose of the Stonehaven Conservation Area Review is to identify the special architectural and historic features of the Old Town and New Town and to confirm the new boundaries for the proposed conservation areas. There are two distinct character areas within the existing conservation area – the New Town which follows a grid layout with the Market Square at its centre, and the Old Town which begins at the harbour with a more informal street pattern which stretches along the High Street towards the Carron Water. This review proposes the splitting up of the existing conservation area boundary and forming two new conservation areas with a seperate appraisal and management plan for both conservation areas.
We are seeking views on the proposals from residents and property owners, and welcome any comments or suggestions that you may have on the proposals through the survey below.
The two new boundaries are shown below on separate maps and outlined in green. We have largely kept the existing conservation area boundary and simply split this into two. For the New Town boundary, in addition to the area around Fetteresso Terrace and Westfield Avenue, that was already excluded in the old boundary, the decision has been taken to remove part of Gurney Street, Stonehaven Medical Centre and some of Arduthie Street, Evan Street and King's Road. These areas are either modern properties, traditional properties with lots of modern interventions, or they do not simply contribute significantly to the wider conservation area.
Both the Stonehaven Old Town Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plans, as well as the Stonehaven New Town Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plans, can be viewed by following the link to the Aberdeenshire Council website via the 'Important Links' tab to the right of this page or, they can be viewed below.
