In early 2023, Aberdeenshire Council announced its successful bid for the UK Government funds for development of cultural and heritage opportunities in Peterhead and Macduff.

A total of 10 projects in Scotland were collectively allocated more than £177 million from the UK Local Regeneration Fund, which will enable projects to create jobs, drive economic growth, help restore people’s pride in the places where they live and spread opportunity more equally.

The “Cultural Tides: North Sea Connections in Aberdeenshire” project will focus on the development of the vacant Arbuthnot House, and the renovation and extension of Macduff Marine Aquarium.

The Peterhead project will see the relocation of the library and the creation of a purpose-built new museum with the ability to showcase significant touring exhibitions. The project will introduce new public greenspace in the town centre, and re-establish the Arbuthnot House walled garden. There will be spaces to hire for functions and events, and the new building will make the most of views across Peterhead and its harbours. Plans for the former museum and library building to be refurbished for a new cultural use have been developed. Aberdeenshire Council has committed to working with stakeholders to identify future funding streams and ensuring the building enjoys a long new lease of life.

The UK Local Regeneration Fund alongside council investment and major contributions from national funding streams has presented a unique opportunity to create a new cultural destination in Peterhead, to help drive growth to re-energise the town and contribute positively to the local economy and community.
