Suitability of the venue:

  • 16.7% said that the venue was Unsuitable, 33.3% said that the venue was Good, and 50% said it was Excellent.

Venue comments:

  • The seating was inappropriate - it was painful to sit on those steps for nearly 4 hours. Venue was very busy, and being next to the swimming pool/leisure centre was off putting.

  • It was a great performance space and made it easy for young musicians to mix during breaks.

  • Easy to find, plenty of space, we didn’t use a practice room, but great to see this was an option.

  • Piano lid needs attention. Needs a new Piano stool.

Would you take part in the competition again:

  • 83.3% of respondents would take part in the competition again, 16.7% would not.

How you heard about the competition:

  • 16.7% heard via their School, 50% heard via the Instrumental Music Service and 33.3% heard via their Teacher.

Other Comments:

  • It was a wonderful and rare opportunity for young people with an ambitious passion for music to connect across the Shire. My son is still young, so it was a fantastic opportunity for him to hear what higher grades sound like etc.

  • Very glad that Aberdeenshire was able to participate, more advertising would be good to attract a bigger crowd, both to watch and to participate. Fantastic to have last year’s winner back to perform again. Overall, it's a great program.

  • Excellent admin and organisation. I liked the adjudicators as well.

  • It would have been good if at the end of the competition the judges could have given each performer some feedback. It's really helpful to get feedback as otherwise you leave not knowing how to improve.

Based on the data:

We will:

  • Liaise with the venue regarding repairs to piano and we will fund a new piano stool.

  • Hold future Scottish Young Musician Competitions in the same or similar venues.

  • Speak to the venue regarding thoroughfare while performances are taking place.

  • Hold a competition again next year.

  • Invite previous winners to perform.

  • Discuss the possibility of individual feedback with adjudicators in future competitions.
