Arbuthnot House will be sensitively restored, and a new extension added to the side. The library will be situated on the ground floor of the new extension, with access to a sunken seating area in the enclosed garden for readings and events. The new museum galleries will start on the ground floor of the refurbished Arbuthnot House, move to the upper floors, then flow through to the first floor of the new extension.
They will allow much more material from the council collections to be displayed. There will be a specific gallery to focus on Peterhead, with the rest of the spaces intended to showcase material from the whole of Aberdeenshire. It will be the first museum of Aberdeenshire and will allow visitors to appreciate the full breadth and richness of the area’s past.
The ground floor café will offer somewhere for a quick coffee or a leisurely lunch with family and friends, with seating spilling out onto a garden terrace. In contrast, the top floor restaurant will be more of a destination; a place to dine on the best regional produce while taking in the incredible views towards the harbours.
