How were the designs developed?

The development site sits within a Conservation Area, so the designs could not adversely impact on the surrounding buildings. The architects started with the operational needs of the library, museum and catering offers, and worked on a design that could accommodate these space requirements whilst also responding imaginatively to the creation of the new extension.

What will happen to the library and museum during the refurbishment?

The museum is already closed to allow the objects to be conserved and prepared for the new museum. The library will remain open in the current building until we are required to move out to accommodate building works, and then will move to a temporary location before finally transferring to the new building.

Will I still be able to use the library?

Yes, whether in the current or temporary library location, we will still provide library services.

Will the new building be more accessible than the old museum and library venue?

Yes, the new building will have public lifts to all rooms/floors, and accessible toilets including a Changing Places toilet.

Will Mochie the polar bear be moving to the new museum?

Yes, and will be displayed in our new galleries with lots of friends.
