Aberdeenshire Council Archaeology Service has the role of understanding, evaluating, safeguarding, and promoting all historic environment sites within the Aberdeenshire Council area (as well as for the Aberdeen City, Angus and Moray Council areas). Information on these sites is held in the Historic Environment Record (formerly known as the Sites and Monuments Record), which is publicly accessible online.

The core part of our work is assessing all planning applications, advising when archaeological mitigation is required, and supporting/advising applicants/developers and the commercial archaeology units undertaking this mitigation throughout this process.

We also provide information, advice and guidance on agricultural development schemes, forestry schemes and utilities work. We also work with a range of national agencies, academic institutions, public and private sector bodies, landowners, community groups and individuals to help manage the historic environment in a sustainable way. We do not ourselves undertake archaeological survey or excavation, but we do support University and community projects which do.

We Asked

How residents and visitors view, value and experience the historic environment and heritage of the region? The survey aimed to:

  • discover more about which sites in Aberdeenshire people feel connected to or consider to be the most important to them
  • understand how people engage with heritage and the historic environment
  • find out if people know about the Council’s Archaeology Service and how we currently promote the historic environment
  • help guide future directions for promotion of the historic environment by the Archaeology Service

You Said

The majority of respondents knew that Aberdeenshire Council has an Archaeology Service, and over half were aware of at least one aspect of the promotional activities of the Archaeology Service.

Most people agreed or strongly agreed that Heritage & the Historic Environment make a positive difference to their lives.

Almost half of all those responding regularly participate in historic environment / heritage activities.

We Will

Do more to promote Aberdeenshire Council Archaeology Service and its existing resources.

Take the responses into consideration when prioritising the team’s future promotional activities (social media posts, leaflet themes, interpretation boards).

Continue to support and promote engagement with historic environment and heritage activities throughout Aberdeenshire.

  • CLOSED: This survey has concluded.

Aberdeenshire Council Archaeology Service has the role of understanding, evaluating, safeguarding, and promoting all historic environment sites within the Aberdeenshire Council area.

Through this survey we are looking for feedback on how you view the historic environment and your heritage in Aberdeenshire, and what sites are important to you, to help guide us in our future work.

    Historic Environment

The historic environment is the physical evidence for human activity, the places that connect you with the past. Our definition of historic environment includes all archaeological and historical sites and objects, ranging from the earliest prehistoric finds and features through to the 20th Century defensive sites of WWI and WWII, from buried archaeological sites to upstanding buildings.

    Heritage
Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Heritage encompasses our inherited traditions & customs, monuments, objects, and culture, and the contemporary activities, meanings, and behaviours that we draw from them.

We are interested to find out what you consider to be your heritage and what part heritage and the historic environment play in your life.

This survey should take around 10 minutes to complete. It is open from 1st to 30th September 2021.
