Banff Active Travel Bridge

Aberdeenshire Council is seeking views from the public and special interest groups on options which have been developed for a new "active travel" (pedestrians and cyclists) bridge crossing the River Deveron between Banff and Macduff. Previous work has identified a new pedestrian, cycling and wheeling crossing as a solution to many of the issues currently faced by people travelling between Banff and Macduff not in a car or other motor vehicle. Four options have been developed and are laid out below for consideration. Members of the public are then invited to express their opinions through a survey. The views obtained from the survey will feed into the appraisal of the options.

Please consider the following four options before completing the below survey to provide us with your opinion on an active travel crossing between Banff and Macduff.

Option 1 - Downstream Cable Stayed

Option 1 consists of a cable-stayed bridge supported by a single tower and located downstream of the existing Banff Bridge. The bridge would connect on the west side adjacent to the Co-op supermarket and immediately opposite this point on the east side. The bridge would not follow a straight alignment and would be slightly curved towards Banff Bridge. The bridge deck would be 3m wide to support pedestrians and cyclists

Option 2 - Downstream Marine Timber

Option 2 consists of a marine timber bridge with multiple supports beneath the deck of the bridge. These supports would line up with those of the existing Banff Bridge. The bridge would be located downstream of the existing Banff Bridge and would follow a straight alignment, joining the west side of the river adjacent to the Co-op to immediately opposite this point on the east side. The bridge deck would be 3m wide to support pedestrians and cyclists

Option 3 - Downstream Concrete

Option 3 consists of a concrete bridge with a series of arches providing support underneath. The bridge will connect to the west of the River Deveron adjacent to the Co-op supermarket with a diagonal alignment, connecting to the east of the river at the old car park facility, slightly shortening the distance for pedestrians and cyclists between the two towns, however making for a slightly longer bridge crossing overall. The bridge deck would be 3m wide to support pedestrians and cyclists.

Option 4 - Upstream Concrete

Option 4 consists of an upstream concrete bridge with a series of arches supporting the structure. On the east bank of the River Deveron, the bridge would connect to the A947, approximately 40m south of Banff Bridge, adjacent to the northern end of the existing stone wall. On the west side, the bridge will curve to the north to connect with the A98 at Bridge Road. Pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities would be installed at either end of the bridge. The bridge deck would be 3m wide to support pedestrians and cyclists.
