Central Buchan Bus Services
Aberdeenshire Council currently provides support for the door-to-door on-demand bus service called Central Buchan A2B. This local bus service covers the majority of the Central Buchan area and can pick up from and drop you off at your chosen location (e.g. home, doctor, bus stops). The A2B bus service operates from 07:30 am to 18:30 pm (Monday to Friday) and 08:00 am to 18:30 pm (Saturday). The contract to provide this bus service expires in August 2026 with the re-tender process taking place from early 2026 and we are seeking the local community's views to help us shape the bus service provision in this area for the next 5 years.
There are two options available to us:
1) continue the current Central Buchan A2B service, or
2) put on a fixed route timetabled bus service.
We cannot support both types of bus service.
Different types of bus services have their own pros and cons. On-demand services - like the current Central Buchan A2B - offer several benefits such as greater flexibility, door-to-door travel and freedom to go anywhere within the service area. However, there are some drawbacks: you need to book your journey in advance, pick-up times are approximate with a possible 10-minute window and you may need to adjust your travel plans depending on availability.
Traditional fixed-route services also have advantages including predictable schedules and routes that you don't need to book - just turn up and travel. But they can be less convenient for some with limited flexibility, especially for those living far from the route, some destinations may not be served and timetables might not suit everyone’s needs.
Before completing this survey, please read the attached short read documents. One provides information on the current on-demand bus service, the area it covers and the operating times; the second provides an example of a fixed timetable bus service.
The feedback obtained from this survey will help to shape our decision on what type of service will best meet the needs of the local area, while providing best value to the council.
The survey should take approximately 5 minutes to complete. Paper copies of the survey can be printed for you at any public library within the Aberdeenshire Council area. Copies will also be available from Maud Resource Centre and from A2B drivers on the bus.
The consultation will be open on Monday 27th October 2025. The closing date for submissions is Friday 2nd January 2026
