In recent years, the volume of coaches bringing thousands of visitors to Stonehaven has increased substantially. These visits are hugely welcome as they support our businesses and the local economy all-year round and ensure that Stonehaven remains a must-see destination for both UK and international tourists. However, that significant increase in coaches is having a detrimental impact on the town centre. The location of coach drop-offs and the length of time drivers park up until pick up time is causing traffic congestion. Similarly, coaches are often parked up in areas unsuitable and unsafe.
In an effort to manage the situation a Bus Stop was created next to the Market Square to provide a drop-off and pick-up point for coach passengers, and the much-loved Land Train, but there was then nowhere for coaches to wait until it was time to pick-up their passengers again. Much consideration has been given to potential locations where coaches could park for a couple of hours in-between dropping off and picking up passengers.
The road that runs behind Baird Park (sometimes known locally as Mill Lade Road) has been used in the past for temporary coach parking when large events such as the Fireballs take place. This has worked well and it is therefore proposed to mark out 4 coach parking bays on this road as well as yellow lines to prevent parking on the turning area. Coaches will continue to drop off and pick up passengers from the Bus Stop at Market Square but can then move to this location whilst waiting until it’s time to collect their passengers again. This will hopefully reduce congestion in the town centre and address local concerns over some unsuitable parking around the town. In general, this facility will be serving coaches parking during the daytime, there will be no requirement for overnight coach parking.
The attached plan shows the proposed design which will continue to allow access to the Allotment site and continued access to Baird Park for the many activities that take place there throughout the year. In addition, an area of Baird Park will continue to be used as a seasonal overflow car park in the peak summer season. This will offset the loss of parking along the roadside, but vehicles will not be allowed to remain in the park overnight. These works will be funded by external grants and not from any normal Council service budgets.
The community are being asked for your views on the proposal before a report goes before the Kincardine and Mearns Area Committee for determination. Please complete the survey below and have your say.
Further formal consultation will also take place on the Traffic Orders that will be required to formalise the Bus Stop at the Market Square and also the introduction of yellow lines around the entrance to Baird Park to provide a turning area for the coaches. This will provide the community with a further opportunity to have their say.
