Aberdeenshire Council are proposing to merge Fintry School and King Edward School.

The statutory consultation ran between 16 February 2026 and 27 March 2026. As part of the consultation a public meeting was held at Turriff Primary School on 4 March 2026, an online survey was available during the consultation period.

Following the statutory consultation period, officers submitted the proposal document, survey results, written and oral representations, and other relevant documentation to His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education in Scotland (HMIE) for their consideration. HMIE produced a report addressing educational aspects of the proposal.

Officers reviewed the proposal in the context of the HMIE report, survey results, oral and written representations and produced a final report on the consultation.

The consultation report will be presented to Banff and Buchan Area Committee on 16 June 2026, Formartine Area Committee on 30 June 2026 and Education & Children’s Services Committee on 27 August 2026. A final decision will then be made by Full Council on 24 September 2026.

    Proposed Merger of Fintry School and King Edward School

    Aberdeenshire Council are consulting on the merger of Fintry School and King Edward School.  The consultation period will run between 16 February 2026 and 27 March 2026.  Aberdeenshire Council are proposing to 

    Merge Fintry and King Edward Schools retaining only the Fintry School building and permanently discontinue education at King Edward School

    OR 

    Merge Fintry and King Edward Schools retaining only the King Edward School building and permanently discontinue education at Fintry School

    The consultation is being undertaken in accordance with the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010. The Act requires that changes to the school estate, including the proposed closure of a school is subject to rigorous statutory consultation.

    Following the consultation period all comments received will be analysed, along with any written responses and emails received regarding the proposal.

    All stakeholders are invited to attend a public meeting which will  at 6.30pm on 4 March 2026, at Turriff Primary School, Meadowbank Road, Turriff, AB53 4WB to discuss the proposal.  

    We want to gather your views on the changes to primary provision within the area.  The options are fully detailed within the consultation proposal document which can be found via the following link:

    King Edward & Fintry Schools Merger Pre-engagement Survey

    Officers are proposing that due to the low rolls at both King Edward School and Fintry School, that they will be considered for a merger, retaining rural education within the area.  

    You are invited to participate in the following short survey indicating which academic year the proposed merger could take place.  The survey will close on Monday 21 April 2025.
