There’s no legal requirement for councils to provide public toilets - but in Aberdeenshire, we want to keep them available in as many places as we can. Having public toilets in our towns makes a big difference. They help people feel comfortable getting out and about - especially families and those with health needs. They also make our towns more welcoming for visitors, support local businesses, and help keep public spaces clean. Plus, working with communities and businesses to run them means we can do more, even with limited resources.
Out of the 70 public toilets in Aberdeenshire, 49 are looked after directly by the Council - we clean them and keep them running. 11 toilets are part of our Community Run Scheme. That means local groups take care of opening, closing, and cleaning them, and in return, they get a yearly grant. The Council still covers things like maintenance and utility bills.
Then there are 10 toilets available through our Comfort Partnership Scheme. These are in local businesses that kindly let the public use their loos without needing to buy anything. In exchange, the Council gives them a yearly grant and promotes their business on our website. We’re always looking for more businesses to join the Comfort Partnership Scheme!
With funding under pressure, we need to make sure we’re using resources wisely - and that’s where you come in. This short survey asks about things like how many toilets there are, when they’re open, and how they’re cleaned. We’ll also ask whether you’d be willing to pay a small fee to use some toilets, to help keep them open.
No decisions have been made on any proposals. However your feedback will help councillors to decide what’s needed and where - so Aberdeenshire Council can plan a service that is fit for the future and that works for everyone.
