In May 2024, a decision was made to mothball Tullynessle School from August 2024. Mothballing is the temporary closure of a school which does not, in itself, lead to statutory consultation. Since October 2024, intensive engagement has been carried out with the wider Tullynessle School community.

At its meeting on 22 May 2025, Education and Children’s Services Committee approved the launch of a statutory consultation on the permanent closure of Tullynessle School.

Aberdeenshire Council is proposing to discontinue education at Tullynessle School, which is currently mothballed, and to re-assign its catchment area to either Alford Primary School or Keig School.

The consultation ran from 1 September until 31 October 2025. This covered the required minimum of 30 days term time consultation.

A public meeting to discuss the proposal was held at Tullynessle and Forbes Hall on 29 September 2025 at 6.00pm and an online survey was available as part of the consultation.

Following the statutory consultation period, officers submitted the proposal document, survey results, written and oral representations, and other relevant documentation to Education Scotland for their consideration. Education Scotland will produce a report addressing educational aspects of the proposal.

Officers will then review the proposal in the context of the Education Scotland report, survey results, oral and written representations and produce a final report on the consultation.

The consultation report will be presented at Marr Area Committee, Education & Children’s Services Committee and Full Council for final decision.

To find out more about the proposal, view Closure of Tullynessle School consultation documents.
