Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative Formula Fund Programme fulfills the Scottish Government commitment that every school pupil in should be offered a year of free music tuition by the time they leave primary school. Additionally, the aim is to address inequity and contribute to the Scottish government’s agenda in tackling child poverty by engaging children and young people most in need.

The Aberdeenshire Youth Music Initiative is set to bring 22 amazing projects to over 120 schools and community groups, reaching at least 10,000 children and young people with the joy of music!

Matilda leads the inclusive composition project "Music and Mountains". This exciting project will engage two entire schools, providing each child with at least 12 hours of music. Using a mix of tuned and untuned percussion, along with cutting-edge electronic equipment and software, students will dive into the world of music creation. They will have the unique opportunity to collaborate with professional musicians, crafting and performing their own original compositions. The project will culminate in a spectacular concert where the children will showcase their musical talents to family and friends.

Samm is leading one of our Upload Projects this year at Gordon Primary and The Gordon Schools Promise Groups. Young people will take part in all aspects from planning to final project delivery, ensuring their voices are heard and the project is meaningful for them, potentially developing skills in song writing, composition, field recording, and music technology. They will be encouraged to explore and create their own music whilst building skills for life and work. Steve is delivering two projects for us this year. "Beat It" - a fun, interactive rhythm project with a strong Professional Development element for school staff. He's also delivering "Drumfun", a hands-on, engaging drumming project that focuses on rhythmic development, teamwork, and self-expression. Drumming has always been a powerful tool to engage pupils of all ages and backgrounds, and Steve's sessions will encourage active participation, inclusivity, and enjoyment of music-making.
Jenny works with Adam Ross to deliver our "Where I Am" project which invites primary school children and their teachers to explore the nature, local ecosystems and landscape around their school. The focus is primarily on music making but is cross-curricular, linking to the environment and creative writing whilst delivering health and well-being benefits through outdoor learning. As a talented multi-instrumentalist, Dave brings a vibrant energy and unwavering support to every initiative. He has a unique talent for connecting with young people, especially those who haven’t yet discovered the joy of music.
