Youth Music Initiative - Programme

Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative Formula Fund Programme fulfills the Scottish Government commitment that every school pupil in should be offered a year of free music tuition by the time they leave primary school. Additionally, the aim is to address inequity and contribute to the Scottish government’s agenda in tackling child poverty by engaging children and young people most in need.

The Aberdeenshire Youth Music Initiative is set to bring 22 amazing projects to over 120 schools and community groups, reaching at least 10,000 children and young people with the joy of music!

We are thrilled to introduce the fantastic team from the Aberdeenshire Instrumental Music Service who bring a huge contribution to our YMI Programme with their incredible projects to ensure that every child in Aberdeenshire gets a year of free music tuition before they leave Primary School.

7 months agoDrake Music Scotland ensure that children with significant, severe, and complex additional support needs receive the opportunity to compose and perform their own music through the use of technology and resources tailored to their individual needs. This project will take place in all 4 of Aberdeenshire’s Freestanding Community Resource Hubs (ASN Schools), all 10 Integrated Community Resource Hubs (part of mainstream schools) as well as with ASN pupils and their peers who attend mainstream classroom education.

7 months agoFèis Rois musicians are exploring traditional music through the "Whistling Away" project with pupils at all 12 primary schools in the Fraserburgh Network. Each pupil gets their own tin whistle to keep after the project is finished. We've already had some new tin whistle lunch-time groups start up as a result.
Fèis Rois is widely recognised as a national leader in the arts, particularly in music education. The organisation aims to give young people and lifelong learners the opportunity to experience and engage with traditional music and Gaelic culture. 7 months agoLive Music Now Scotland gives outstanding young artists the opportunity of performing at the start of their careers and enables high-quality live music to reach people throughout our communities, especially those who wouldn't normally have access to it.
This year, JKL DUO will visit Alford Academy and all ten primary schools in the network. They will give a lunch-time performance in all schools, as well as a short performance and masterclass at Alford Academy. For many young children, this will be the first time they have seen a live music performance.

They’ll introduce students to the world of Bagpipes and traditional Scottish music through the fun and inclusive use of chanters. The project will also feature lively dancing, culminating in a joyous end-of-project Ceilidh celebration.

Building on our Year 21 pilot, Neil and Tyler will explore new ways to support and empower young people in radio and related creative industries. By focusing on Articles 12 and 13 of the United Nations Rights of the Child that has recently been incorporated into Scots Law, we aim to amplify the voices of young, especially those in rurally isolated areas. We’re partnering with Kemnay Academy, an Excelerate School, and Fraserburgh Academy to make this vision a reality

7 months agoMegan will be delivering this project in four rurally isolated primary schools this year. Over twelve sessions, she aims to introduce children to some of the elements of music (pitch, dynamics, timbre and duration) graphic score, and music technology, through collaborative group compositions, inspired by the elements of nature and all the sounds that surround us in daily life.

This dynamic music and sound project is designed for young people aged 12 to 25. Participants will be involved in every stage, from planning to final delivery, ensuring their voices are heard and the project resonates with them. They’ll have the opportunity to develop skills in songwriting, composition, field recordings, and music technology. Encouraged to explore and create their own music, they’ll also build valuable life and work skills.

7 months agoAdam delivers our Upload Project with Aberdeenshire's Young People's Organising and Campaigning Group (YPOC).
Young people will take part in all aspects from planning to final project delivery, ensuring their voices are heard and the project is meaningful for them, potentially developing skills in song writing, composition, field recordings, and music technology. They will be encouraged to explore and create their own music whilst building skills for life and work.

7 months agoAdam collaborates with the talented Jenny Sturgeon on our inspiring “Where I Am” project. This year, he’s also delivering his own exciting initiative - “Music Essentials.” This dynamic series of workshops is designed to introduce primary pupils to the fundamental skills and knowledge of music. Through fun and interactive sessions, pupils will explore rhythm, melody, group singing, percussion, and foundational music theory.
