Adult Learners Forum for Aberdeenshire represents the views of learners, giving them the opportunity to have a voice, discuss issues, engage with decision-makers, and contribute to improving and developing learning opportunities.
Our five main aims are to:
- Increase awareness of adult learning opportunities
- Remove stigma around adult learning.
- Encourage others to take up learning opportunities.
- Influence decision making around adult learning.
- Encourage positive conversations on adult learning.

These themes led to a lot of dialogue and discussion around the value ALFA members of placed on certification as well as accreditation.
Overall, ALFA members felt there was value in certification in wider achievement.

Share March 2023 Celebration of Learning on Facebook Share March 2023 Celebration of Learning on Twitter Share March 2023 Celebration of Learning on Linkedin Email March 2023 Celebration of Learning linkThe Adult Learners' Forum for Aberdeenshire co-designed with the Community Learning and Development (CLD) Service the Celebration of Learning event on the 28th of March held at Inverurie Heritage Centre. Adult Learners' Forum for Aberdeenshire (ALFA)member Charlie McCorry compered the event.
The event was attended by over eighty people from all over Aberdeenshire, including Cllr Gillian Owen, Chair of the Education and Children's Services, Head of Service for Communities Wellbeing and Partnerships and CLD Service Manager and Adult Learning and Communities Team Leader, Jane Verity.
Throughout the night, Penny Downs, a local artist did a live illustration of the stories and messages shared by learners.
Eight individuals shared their stories another eight individuals shared their journeys in the community in their work.
This included project with Aberchirder Men's Shed and CLD partnership, The Udny project, The Old Meldrum Mental Health Group and the KMYC project supported by CLD staff.
Comments from those who attended highlighted that the night was inspirational and informative.

ALFA members thanked Simone Sinclair who has supported the group from its establishment in 2021 with a bouquet of flowers at the Learners’ Celebration event and welcomed Clare Taylor-Brown and Natalie Cooper as their new CLD support team.
With CLD staff support, tabletop discussions were facilitated at the Celebration of Learning event. Listed below are the discussion themes and responses.

New forum members were recruited.
Engage Aberdeenshire was launched.
Celebration of learning was hosted by the learners forum. Bringing together 80 learners to talk about all things adult learning.

Adult Learners' Forum for Aberdeenshire is currently at this stageForum members developed a strategy for widening representation and participation.
Forum members facilitated online sessions on learner voice and the benefits of joining local learner forums.
Forum is shortlisted and then wins Adult Learning Group Award during #ALW24
Adult Learning Consultation completed. Te survey explored the benefits, barriers, concerns and aspirations surrounding community based adult learning.
Adult learners contributed to the budget setting process of Aberdeenshire Council

Adult learners contribute their voices to consultations around local transport, advice services and sheltered housing
Learners in Turriff, Banff, Macduff and Stonehaven are supported to have their voices heard as part of place planning.
Community Learning and Development staff are working locally to identify and support learners who need support to have their voices heard
