In October 2023 the UK Government launched its 'Long-Term Plan for Towns', supporting 55 UK towns including seven in Scotland. In March Peterhead was one of three more Scottish towns added to the programme. The programme announced a potential £20 million in endowment funding for Peterhead over 10 years from April 2025.
This investment aims to empower communities with the resources to develop their vision for renewal, addressing the root causes of local deprivation.
Guidance was published on the process for establishing a Town Board and what the Board was expected to do to develop and deliver a Long-Term Plan:
Peterhead Town Board should include representatives from the voluntary and education sector, business, cultural, arts and sports, Aberdeenshire Council, Police Scotland and the local MP.
It is to be independently chaired and be formed to represent community interests, business perspectives and public organisations.
The Long-Term Plan must include a 10-year vision, and an initial 3-year investment plan.
Following the UK Government’s guidance:
Peterhead’s Town Board Chair, James Buchan DL, was appointed on 4th June 2024.
Aberdeenshire Council worked with the Chair to form an interim Town Board, and it met for the first time on 28th June 2024.
In the Autumn budget, the UK Government confirmed that it would retain and reform the Long-Term Plan for Towns programme as part of a broader regeneration initiative. This programme will unite residents, businesses, and community representatives to drive positive change, ensuring everyone, regardless of background, can benefit.
The Peterhead Town Board will collaborate with community members to identify priority areas for investment. Once these priorities are established, the Board will submit a detailed plan to the UK Government, which must be approved before the programme’s official launch.
Priorities for Peterhead
Peterhead Town Board has been asking for local views on the right priorities for the Long-Term Plan for the town. Throughout October, November and December the Board asked for feedback on the first three priorities it could invest in.
The themes are:
Safety & Security,
High Streets, Heritage & Regeneration,
Transport & Connectivity.
Having your say
Peterhead Town Board has aimed to meet people who live, work, study and visit the town. It held an event, attended meeting, activities and events throughout the town including:
Meet the Town Board Thursday 10th October 2024 at the Palace Hotel, Peterhead
Peterhead Library Events
Producers Market and Space Open Day
Peterhead Panto
Workplace sessions
A survey, online and paper, also ran from early October to late December. The survey has been closed to allow feedback so far to considered by the board. A summary of the feedback so far will be prepared and shared here.

In March 2024 Peterhead was added to the list of townsparticipating in the ‘Long-Term Plan for Towns’ programme.
There is potential for Peterhead to receive endowment style funding, for up to 10-years starting in 2025, to be invested in priorities decided by the new Peterhead Town Board.
Peterhead Town Board must submit a plan to the UK Government, and have it agreed, before the programme starts.
In the Autumn budget, the UK Government confirmed that it would retain and reform the Long-Term Plan for Towns programme as part of a broader regeneration initiative. The Peterhead Town Board will collaborate with community members to identify priority areas for investment. Once these priorities are established, the Board will submit a detailed plan to the UK Government, which must be approved before the programme’s official launch.

There are ten questions in the survey plus some questions about you.
