In October 2023 the UK Government launched its 'Long-Term Plan for Towns', supporting 55 UK towns including seven in Scotland. In March Peterhead was one of three more Scottish towns added to the programme. The programme announced a potential £20 million in endowment funding for Peterhead over 10 years from April 2025.

This investment aims to empower communities with the resources to develop their vision for renewal, addressing the root causes of local deprivation.

Guidance was published on the process for establishing a Town Board and what the Board was expected to do to develop and deliver a Long-Term Plan:

  • Peterhead Town Board should include representatives from the voluntary and education sector, business, cultural, arts and sports, Aberdeenshire Council, Police Scotland and the local MP.
  • It is to be independently chaired and be formed to represent community interests, business perspectives and public organisations.
  • The Long-Term Plan must include a 10-year vision, and an initial 3-year investment plan.

Following the UK Government’s guidance:

  • Peterhead’s Town Board Chair, James Buchan DL, was appointed on 4th June 2024.
  • Aberdeenshire Council worked with the Chair to form an interim Town Board, and it met for the first time on 28th June 2024.

In the Autumn budget, the UK Government confirmed that it would retain and reform the Long-Term Plan for Towns programme as part of a broader regeneration initiative. This programme will unite residents, businesses, and community representatives to drive positive change, ensuring everyone, regardless of background, can benefit.

The Peterhead Town Board will collaborate with community members to identify priority areas for investment. Once these priorities are established, the Board will submit a detailed plan to the UK Government, which must be approved before the programme’s official launch.

  • In March 2024 Peterhead was added to the list of towns participating in the ‘Long-Term Plan for Towns’ programme.

There is potential for Peterhead to receive endowment style funding, for up to 10-years starting in 2025, to be invested in priorities decided by the new Peterhead Town Board.

Peterhead Town Board must submit a plan to the UK Government, and have it agreed, before the programme starts.

The Board may invest funding across three broad themes:

    • Safety and Security
    • High Streets, Heritage and Regeneration
    • Transport and Connectivity

You are invited to learn more about the possible options for investment and give your feedback.

Your feedback will help Peterhead Town Board to decide on the right priorities for the Town.

There are ten questions in the survey plus some questions about you.
