A carer is generally defined as an individual who provides, or intends to provide, care for another individual. A young carer is under the age of 18 years old, or 18 if still at school.
Under the Carers (Scotland) Act 2016, which was implemented on 1st April 2018, there are requirements for local authorities and health and social care partnerships to provide Local Carer Strategies for carers in their area. There is also a requirement to develop Local Eligibility Criteria for carers.

Review of Aberdeenshire Young Carer Strategy
Aberdeenshire Council is currently reviewing its Aberdeenshire Young Carer Strategy, which is our plan of what we have been doing and what we plan to do to support young carers over the next five years. We are asking young carers and people who support them, to give their views on how we support young carers to sustain their caring role and have a meaningful life alongside caring. There are two surveys below: one for young carers and one for people who support young carers. Closing date for responses is 23:59 22nd September 2024,

One of these responsibilities was to develop and publish a Local Young Carers Strategy for young carers and this was first published in 2018 following consultation with carers and all other interested stakeholders.
Aberdeenshire Council is reviewing it’s Young Carer Strategy, which is our plan of what we have been doing to support young carers over the last three years. Your views are very important in helping us identify what we are doing well and how we can improve support to young carers over the next five years.
We want to engage with young carers, those supporting them and anyone with an interest in supporting young carers and so we’re asking for views on this. This survey is for young carers.
A young carer is anyone under the age of 18 (or 18 if still at school) who cares for a family member or friend due to illness, disability, mental ill-health, alcohol or drug dependency. Young carers may look after their mum, dad, brother, sister, grandparent, or someone else close to them. Young carers may look after the cared-for person on their own or they may be helped by others.
